Is R-410A Being Banned? Understanding the 2025 Refrigerant Phaseout

Published June 2, 2025

If you’re planning to upgrade your air conditioner or just want to stay informed, you may have heard that R-410A is being phased out. But is R-410A actually banned? And what does that mean for your current or future cooling system?

At Hummingbird Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric, we’re here to break down the facts about the 2025 refrigerant phaseout – what’s changing, why it matters, and how homeowners can prepare.

What Is R-410A and Why Is It Changing?

R-410A is a refrigerant used in most modern air conditioners and heat pumps. It’s been the standard replacement for R-22 (Freon), which was fully banned in 2020 due to its ozone-depleting effects.

While R-410A is safe for the ozone layer, it has a high global warming potential (GWP), meaning it contributes to climate change when released into the atmosphere. In response, the EPA is now phasing down R-410A and other high-GWP refrigerants under the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which took effect January 1, 2025.

Is R-410A Banned in 2025?

Not exactly. R-410A is not banned outright, but the U.S. has begun reducing its production and import as part of a multi-year phaseout. Here’s what that means:

  • You can still use and service an existing R-410A system
  • HVAC technicians can still buy and handle R-410A for maintenance and repair
  • New HVAC systems will gradually transition using low-GWP refrigerants, such as R-454B

So while R-410A isn’t illegal, it is being replaced, and availability will decrease over the next few years.

What Is R-454B and How Is It Different?

R-454B is one of the leading replacements for R-410A. It’s already being adopted in newly manufactured systems and offers several benefits:

  • Lower global warming potential – about 78% less than R-410A
  • Similar cooling performance and pressure characteristics
  • Increased system efficiency in many cases
  • More environmentally friendly, aligning with new EPA climate goals

While R-454B systems are still new to the market, they’re expected to become the new standard in residential HVAC by 2026 and beyond.

Do I Need to Replace My R-410A System Now?

If your AC or heat pump uses R-410A, there’s no need to panic or rush into a new system; you can continue use without any penalty. However, it’s smart to plan ahead if:

  • Your system is 10-15 years old or older
  • You’ve had repeated refrigerant-related repairs
  • You’re already considering an upgrade for efficiency or performance
  • You want to be proactive about future refrigerant availability and costs

Newer systems using low-GWP refrigerants may offer better energy savings, smarthome features, and improved environmental impact, making them a strong investment even before a breakdown occurs.

How the 2025 Refrigerant Phaseout Affects New Installations

If you’re installing a new HVAC system in 2025 or later, you may see both R-410A and R-454B systems available, depending on brand and model availability.

Here’s what to consider:

  • R-454B systems are more future-proof and compliant with upcoming EPA standards
  • R-410A systems may be slightly less expensive upfront but could be harder to service in 5-10 years
  • Incentives and tax credits may apply to higherefficiency, lowGWP systems

Our technicians can walk you through both options and help you choose the right system for your home and budget.
